Istikhara in Islam | How to perform Istikhara full Guide Step by Step
This article is about the Istikhara in Islam full guidance. In this article I have mentioned what is istikhara? How is this performed? What are the dua of istikhara? What is the benefit? What do the holy Quran and the Prophet say about the istikhara? and many more.
Meaning of Istikhara in Islam
The word Istikhara (الاستخارة) comes from the Arabic root خ ي ر, which means goodness. Which means: “to seek goodness from Allah”. In Aamal, Istikhara refers to asking Allah to guide us towards what is best in our affairs.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught Istikhara as a form of dua and prayer whenever a person has to take a decision.
Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA) reported:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach us the way of doing Istikhara in all matters, just as he taught us the Surahs of the Qur’an”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1162)
Importance of Seeking Allah’s Guidance
Islam teaches that humans have limited knowledge and cannot always see what is truly beneficial. Allah alone knows what is best.
The Qur’an reminds us:
“But perhaps you hate a thing while it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing while it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:216)
This ayah says the very essence of Istikhara: we ask Allah to guide us to what is good, because our vision is limited while His knowledge is perfect.
The Prophet ﷺ also said about the Istikhara:
“O Allah, I seek Your guidance by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1162)
When Muslims Usually Perform Istikhara
Muslims generally perform Istikhara when they have to take an important decision regarding their some doubtful tasks. These may be Marriage proposals, Business decisions, Career choices, Travels, Education and studies etc.
Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA) told that the Prophet ﷺ did not restrict Istikhara to major decisions only, rather, it can be performed in all matters. He says
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach us to perform Istikhara in all matters”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1162)
This means Istikhara can be prayed not just for some major decisions but also can be performed for smaller choices too where one seeks Allah’s raham and direction.
Now easily anybody can say that the Istikhara is a tool for every Muslim to connect with Allah whenever there he feels doubt or uncertainty.
The Concept of Istikhara in Islam by Qur’an and Hadith
References from Qur’an about Seeking Guidance
The Qur’an constantly reminds us that Allah is the All-Knowing, while humans have limited knowledge. That is why believers are encouraged to seek Allah’s guidance in all matters.
As Allah says:
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:216) (see the translation on page no.1)
This ayah is the foundation of Istikhara. It shows us that what seems right to us may not be truly good, and what seems difficult may not be actually difficult.
The Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ regarding Istikhara
Istikhara is not mentioned in the holy Qur’an only, but it was directly taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his followers as a way of seeking Allah’s direction.
Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA) narrated:
The narrator Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA) says “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach us to perform Istikhara in all matters, just as he taught us a Surah from the Qur’an.The prophet said: ‘If any one of you is concerned about a decision, let him pray two rakats of prayer apart from the fard ones, then say:
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1162)
This Hadith represents Istikhara as a Sunnah and shows that the Prophet ﷺ kept on teaching it giving it the same importance as learning the holy Qur’an.
Spiritual Wisdom Behind It
The spiritually the Istikhara prevents arrogance, reduces anxiety, and strengthens the tawakkul on Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ himself taught this attitude in the supplication of Istikhara:
“O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my worldly life, and my ultimate destiny, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. But if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my worldly life, and my ultimate destiny, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it. And decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me content with it.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1162)
This hadith says that the Istikhara is surrendering one’s heart to Allah’s will. It is not about seeing dreams only.
When Should Istikhara Be Performed?
Major Life Decisions (Marriage, Career, Business, Travel, etc.)
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged Muslims to seek Allah’s guidance through Istikhara in all important matters of life. These include marriage, career, business investments, travel, or any choice that can shape one’s future.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1162) as I have mentioned this hadith earlier.
This Hadith informs us that Istikhara is not bounded to only religious issues. It can be performed for Marriage, job opportunities, or even travelling that affects a believer’s life.
The Qur’an also emphasises consultation and seeking Allah’s support before acting:
(Consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely upon Him.)
(Surah Aal-e-Imran 3:159)
Together, these references say us to make effort, consult, and then rely on Allah through Istikhara.
Situations of Confusion or Doubt
Sometimes we are unable to decide that the decision we have taken is right or wrong. In such conditions, Istikhara helps us place the decision in Allah’s hands, seeking clarity and ease.
The Prophet ﷺ said in the Istikhara dua:
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1162)
In the situations of doubt, Istikhara teaches us not to fall into anxiety. Through the Istikhara, a Muslim seeks Allah’s clarity and trusts that He will guide him to what is the best.
The Qur’an also reminds us:
“And put your trust in Allah, if you are believers.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:23)
This is the spiritual backbone of Istikhara: in the time of confusion, surrender the matter to Allah, knowing that His knowledge surpasses all.
When Not to Perform Istikhara
Istikhara is a means of guidance, not a replacement for responsibility or common sense. There are situations where Istikhara is not applicable:
- Matters already made clear by Qur’an or Sunnah
For example, one does not perform Istikhara about whether to pray, fast, or avoid haram income—because these are already decided by Allah.
Allah says:
“It is not for a believing man or woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, to have any choice in their affair…”
(Surah Al-Ahzab 33:36)
- Trivial or insignificant matters
For example, choosing what colour shirt to wear does not need Istikhara. The Prophet ﷺ taught it for meaningful matters that impact faith or life.
- After a decision is finalised with certainty
If one has already committed with full clarity, Istikhara is not required. Instead, one should proceed with tawakkul (reliance on Allah).
How to Pray Istikhara Namaz
How to Perform Istikhara – According to Hanafi Madhhab
Istikhara (الاستخارة) means seeking goodness from Allah. It is a Nafl salah the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, guided to his followers.
Step 1: Make Intention (Niyyah)
First of all make a intention in your heart that you are going to perform the Istikhara to seek Allah’s guidance in a special matter. The matter could be marriage, career, business, travel, or any other halal decision.
Remember: Istikhara is only for matters that are permissible (mubah). It must not be performed for the action of haram nor obligations already commanded by Allah and his Rasool.
Step 2: Perform Wudu (Ablution)
Make wudu and ensure your place of prayer is clean.
Step 3: Pray 2 Rak’ah of Nafl Salah
According to the Hadith, Istikhara should begin with two rak‘ahs of Nafl prayer, apart from the fardh ones.
Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA) narrated:
“If any one of you is concerned about a decision, let him pray two rakah of prayer apart from the obligatory ones…”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1162)
This is performed like any other nafl salah as you pray after the Sunnah of Maghrib.
Recommended Surahs (Mustahabb, not compulsory):
- In the first rak‘ah, after Surah al-Fatiha, recite Surah al-Kafirun (109).
- In the second rak‘ah, after Surah al-Fatiha, recite Surah al-Ikhlas (112).
This recommendation is based on some Hanafi scholars who preferred these Surah. However, any Surahs may be recited.
Step 4: Recite the Istikhara Dua

After completing both the rak‘ahs, recite the famous Istikhara dua taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
dua e istikhara as mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1162)
When you recite ‘ (هَذَا الأَمْرَ)’ repeat the matter to your mind, or keep mentioning it quietly by name after the dua.
Additional Short Dua for Guidance
(for general use, not specific to Istikhara)
Step 5: Trust in Allah’s Decision (Tawakkul)
After completing the Istikhara, we should not expect miraculous signs or dreams. The outcome of Istikhara is understood when:
- Allah makes the matter easy and smooth → it is a sign of goodness.
- Allah creates difficulty → it is a sign that it was not good for you.
The true benefit is the peace of heart that comes from placing the decision in Allah’s hands.
Some Additional Recommendations while performing the Istikhara
Timing: It is preferable to perform Istikhara at night before sleeping.
Repetition: keep on repeating Istikhara for seven nights until you get the benefit of istikhara.
Benefits of Doing Istikhara
•Peace of Heart and Soul
The holy Qur’an says?
“In the remembrance of Allah do hearts really find peace.”
(Surah Ar-Ra’d 13:28)
Now, Istikhara isn’t just another prayer. It’s next level because you’re combining salat, dua, AND tossing your worries at Allah’s feet. It’s like a spiritual reset button—a serious calm for your wandering, stressed-out heart.
•Boosts the Faith on Allah
The Prophet says
(Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2344)
•It removes Regret
Ever get stuck replaying a choice in your head, thinking, “Did I pick wrong?” Istikhara is the literal cure for that annoying regret spiral. You’re basically saying, “Ya Allah, You know best. Just sort it, make it good, and help me be cool with whatever happens.”
“Decree the good for me wherever it is, and make me content with it.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1162)
Conclusion
It is essential for us to remember that true success lies in surrendering to Allah’s wisdom. Our knowledge and vision are limited, but Allah’s knowledge has no limit. By relying on Allah almighty, we save ourselves from choices that may harm us, and we open doors to what is truly beneficial for us.
Allah ﷻ reminds us in the Qur’an:
as I have cited the translation above. (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:216)
The Prophet ﷺ taught us the significance of Istikhara as a means of seeking Allah’s guidance. As The prophet says
As I have mentioned above with translation. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1166)
Istikhara is a lifelong tool for guidance. It is not just a prayer for moments of confusion. Istikhara transforms decisions into acts of worship and ensures that our paths are aligned with Allah’s will.
